Indore : The New Metropolitan City

Indore is one of the fastest growing commercial centers of the state of Madhya Pradesh in central India. This city, located on the plateau of Malwa, gets its name from the temples of Indreshwar and Indrapur. Founded by Rao Nandlal Chaudhary, Indore has been ruled by many famous rulers from the Rajputs to the Mughals and the Marathas, until it became part of the British Raj. Indore is situated about 200 km from Bhopal, the state capital.

Indore is located on the banks of the Rivers Saraswati and Khan, and is flanked by the Vindhya plains.A very prominent landmark of Indore is the glorious 200-year-old palace, Rajwada that was constructed during the reign of the Holkar Dynasty. An amalgamation of various styles borrowed from the French, Mughal and Maratha architecture, the Rajwada Palace is a seven storey building.  The other sightseeing options are the temple circuit consisting of Khajrana, Kaanch and Bada Ganpati temples and the Central museum with its diverse repository of artifacts.

The original home of Shree Sansthan Bada Rawala houses a large library with 28,000 books and various beautiful artifacts.

Chhatri Bagh is another popular attraction in the city, dedicated to the deceased members of the Holkar dynasty and is famous for its canopies.Ujjain, the historic town, can make for a one day trip from Indore. Another temple town nearby is Omkareshwar and the heritage destination of Maheshwar. The pretty hill station of Mandu can be an interesting excursion from Indore.

Indore is well known for its unique handicraft items that display the talents of the city’s artisans. The main products are Terracotta idols and Paper Mache products. The Chanderi and Maheshwari silks of Indore are known all over the world for its artistic grandeur.Indore also holds a special place in the field of education. The rare distinction of being the only city to have both an IIT and an IIM makes it quite coveted for students. It is only natural that many companies, including some multinational companies, have moved their offices to Indore

Cuisine is also quite popular here. A lot of snacks are made out of beaten rice flakes or Poha. The popular spots for catching up on a bite are Sarafa Bazaar and Chhappan Dukan.Indore is well connected with the rest of the country with flights handled out of its domestic airport, Devi Ahilyabai Holkar airport. The Indore railway station has a lot of trains from most major Indian towns. It is also easy to access Indore by road, with the major national highways passing through the city.A trip to Indore can be both an insight into a traditional town and a city that is fast redefining its identity.
